A Message From Tamryn
Hi! My name is Tamryn, I am the creator of the Business Builder and I am so excited to tell you how it came about!!
I call myself an "accidental" accountant, because accounting featured absolutely nowhere in my life plan when I was young, not even in the small print. And yet, here we are - with me owning an accounting firm!
My journey into business ownership was as unplanned as my journey into accounting. I had an opportunity fall into my lap and I grabbed it! I thought that if I was good at accounting, I would be good at running an accounting business. Nope.
There is SO much more to running a business than being good at something (like accounting). Oh boy, is there more! It comes with a long list of tasks, duties and responsibilities that you never even knew existed.
Somehow I muddled through and in 2015, I was brave (and perhaps still stupid) enough to open a second business with a friend of mine. And the cycle began again.
I was now 100% responsible for Pharsyde Accounting and 50% responsible for The Munching Mongoose!
It was thrilling, exhausting, exciting, often lonely (even with a partner), and incredibly overwhelming.
But the worst part is having to be all these things when you have no idea how to be them! Or looking backwards later and realising which roles you never filled, because you had no idea they existed and needed filling!
In the time that I created these two companies, I managed to go through burnout three times. The last bout of burnout was absolutely the worst, I had pushed way too far and I ended up going through an actual mental breakdown. That breakdown resulted in some bad mental, physical and emotional consequences – some of which I still have to deal with today.
But, I am a firm believer that we can always extract good from a bad situation. That breakdown made me sit down and re-evaluate everything. My personal goals, my purpose, my mission, my businesses and my business goals. Everything. It made me really ask myself what I wanted from life.
And this is the problem with bumbling into business ownership - instead of doing a Bachelor of Commerce or an MBA – is that you don’t know what you don’t know! And so, you don’t know that you need to learn something, or change the way you do something!
After re-evaluating the way I work, I managed to create something I had been trying to build for ten years: a business that didn’t need me. Ten years! Sometimes I want to cry when I think of the time and energy that I lost doing things the wrong way! But I can’t, because those lessons and the resulting relief led me to open my third business – without burning out!
So now, I, Tamryn Dicks: Accidental Accountant and Accidental Business Owner am I Purposeful Business Owner who purposefully helps other business owners create a life of freedom. I am so excited to have the chance to help you build yours!
